Here is a Cosmic Skull from me.
And the confusing traslation:
--------------------------------------------
The astral travelers in Church Of The Cosmic Skull are back with their second album, Science Fiction.
This is a record beyond the usual and in honesty's name, I do not really know in what end to start.
So, lets try to extract the ingredients a small bit at a time.
There is a little bit of everything here. You get an odd mix of Beatles, Melodies, Ghost, Soul, Thin Lizzy, Warmth and Beatiful Softness with an underlying swinging "Full Speed ahead" feeling, Mott The Hoople, Gospel, ELO, Pop, Zappa, Organs, Abba meets Black Sabbath, Fat Guitars, Beautiful solos, blues, harmonies and overdoses of sacred harmonical choirs who creates a wall of sounds that would make Phil Spector himself green of envy.
And lots, I really mean lots, more. Pheeew!
Is this good or just too much? We'll see.
Let's start with the music. Here's a formidable abundance of details and instruments. But that's no problem, it's so nicely composed with very strong songs and incredible melodies. What hits me first are the beautiful organs and guitars. Sometimes so caressing, you feel like crying.
The singing and the choir parts are also on the verge of celestial at times. The church manages to weave together a musical melting pot that is almost perfect, as it becomes a mixture of simplicity and ordered chaos. All at the same time.
The first songs on the record are purely magic, but something happens. Or, that's probably more, what does not happen. There is no text for one of the songs, "The Cards That You're Playing". Or, rather, it becomes minimalist. My first thought is "cool, a song with just refrain, no verses". But after a while, it just turns out to be a constant repetition of the same sentence, yes, it stops beeing cool after a while. Even though you are they performs the text line with many nuances, I start losing my focus. It's a little disturbing to me, when the music is so damn good. Or it's just that I'm missing something artistic on the whole. But that's the only thing I have a hang up on, because then the record recovers and continues its magical psychedelic space trip.
I also like the band's marketing before the release. Recently, as a member of the "Church", daily links is mailed with access to the new songs, with explanations and some other little things. Innovative.
With only one less good song, on an otherwise amazingly well-composed and interesting album,I can't give anything else than 4 aces out of 5. I do not know if this record suits all in taste, but everyone should try giving it a couple of spins with The Church Of The Cosmic Skull. Who knows, you might get stuck in the cult of Space Hippies, just like me.
At the time of writing, I do not know the exact date the record is released, but pre-order begins on May 1st.
